However, they couldn't agree on a single statement. Some leaders wanted to speak out strongly against the test, but others were hesitant. Because the group works on consensus—meaning everyone has to agree—the final statement remained divided.

Beijing has hit back, accusing the leaders of Palau and others of causing unnecessary "hype." They claim the test was just routine, but for many islands in the region, the sight of a missile landing in their waters was a sign of China flexing its muscles and showing off its military strength.

The disagreement highlights growing tensions in the Pacific. As major world powers like China and others compete for influence in the region, smaller island nations are finding it harder to stay united on big international issues.
