Russia just launched a massive attack on Ukraine. Officials say Russia sent two missiles and 580 drones at the country. It is one of the largest attacks we have seen in a long time.

Ukraine’s military says they managed to shoot down 536 of those drones. Even with that success, the sheer number of drones is a huge problem.

Russia is now using new, jet-powered drones. These are much faster than the older models. Because they are so fast, the people defending Kyiv are in a real race to stop them before they hit their targets. The goal of these attacks is to smash Ukraine’s energy grid—the system that keeps the lights on and homes warm during the cold months.

Groups of volunteers are helping soldiers on the ground, scanning the dark skies to spot the drones. It is a stressful, life-or-death situation for everyone involved.

Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, confirmed the scale of the attack. Defense experts say that Ukraine is currently trying to build or find faster weapons of their own to keep up with this new threat from Russia. For now, the people in Ukrainian cities are staying in shelters and trying to stay safe while the fighting continues.
