A terrible situation is unfolding in Oleshky, a town in Ukraine that is currently occupied by Russian forces. People living there are trapped and facing a major humanitarian crisis.
Reports from the area describe a desperate scene. There is almost no food, electricity, or medicine left for the people who remain. Some residents are so hungry that they have been reduced to eating grass and leaves to survive.
Because the situation is so bad, some civilians are deciding to risk everything to get out. They are traveling along what many call a “road of death” to try to find food and safety. It is a dangerous journey, and many are risking their lives just to escape the hunger and the conditions in the town.
People on the ground say the smell of death is everywhere. The crisis has become so severe that even people as far away as Tokyo have held demonstrations to draw attention to the suffering in Oleshky.
For those still trapped inside, each day is a fight for survival. Basic needs like clean water and medical care are nearly impossible to find. With no way to get supplies into the town, the people there are left on their own, waiting for help that remains out of reach.
