South Korean prosecutors are asking for the death penalty for the country's former president, Yoon Suk Yeol.

This follows his controversial decision to declare martial law last year. Martial law means the military takes control of the government, replacing regular laws and local police.

In December, Yoon shocked the country by announcing this military control. He said he was doing it to stop political enemies he called anti-state forces. The move lasted for only a few hours before the South Korean parliament voted to block it. This forced him to reverse the decision.

Now, officials say his actions were a serious crime against the nation. They are accusing him of insurrection, which is basically trying to start an uprising against the government.

Because of the extreme nature of the accusations, prosecutors are seeking the most severe punishment possible under the law. It is now up to the court to decide his fate.
