Artificial intelligence, or AI, is changing the world very quickly. Now, the European Union is hitting the brakes.

Ursula von der Leyen, the leader of the European Commission, says she wants to talk with the people who build these powerful computer programs. She wants to invite the top "frontier" AI labs to a meeting. These are the companies making the most advanced and smartest AI tools.

Why the meeting? The main reason is safety. Some people are worried that AI is becoming too powerful, too fast. There is also a push to protect kids on social media.

To make this happen, the European Union is even thinking about changing its rules. Right now, there are strict laws against companies working together, which are called antitrust laws. The EU might relax these laws so that rival AI companies can share information about how to make their tools safer without getting in legal trouble.

Some experts say this is a good start, but it might not be enough. They argue that Europe needs to do a lot more to prove that it can really keep people safe while still letting new technology grow.

The big goal here is to make sure that as AI gets smarter, it doesn't get out of control. By bringing the creators and the government together, the EU hopes to find a middle ground where innovation can happen without putting the public at risk.
