A region in Siberia called Irkutsk is offering a massive reward to anyone who can sign up foreign citizens to fight in the war in Ukraine.
The payment is 1.8 million rubles, which is about $18,000 in U.S. dollars. This is being offered as a commission to people who act as recruiters.
This move comes as Russia struggles to find enough soldiers for the front lines. Military experts and observers say Russia is currently using a 'culture of lying' to hide the true scale of its losses and difficulties.
Rights groups, including Amnesty International, have criticized these recruitment tactics. They say that bringing in foreign nationals to fight in this way is essentially human trafficking.
There are also growing reports that the Russian military is using arrests, threats, and other forms of force to make people sign up. Many recruits are being sent to the battlefield against their will as part of a desperate attempt to keep the war effort going.
International experts suggest that Vladimir Putin is facing a 'nightmare' scenario because he cannot find enough willing soldiers to keep his military campaign moving forward.
