To try and stay in control, the Basij—a volunteer paramilitary group that helps the government keep order—has been tightening its grip on the streets. They are trying to stop protests and keep people from speaking out.

Even the Revolutionary Guard, a powerful branch of the Iranian military, is reportedly feeling the squeeze. As the pressure from the public grows, it is becoming clearer that the government’s biggest challenges are happening right in its own backyard.
