KYIV — Thousands of demonstrators descended upon downtown Kyiv on Sunday, marking the third consecutive week of protests following the controversial dismissal of the nation's defense minister. The ongoing unrest reflects deep-seated public frustration regarding government transparency and defense procurement reforms.

Demonstrators filled the capital's main thoroughfares, carrying placards and chanting for the reinstatement of the ousted official. The protests, which show little sign of waning, have become a focal point for internal political tensions as the country remains embroiled in active conflict.

Former Defense Minister Fedorov, whose removal sparked the unrest, issued a statement on Saturday attempting to temper the political volatility. Fedorov pledged that he would not oppose President Zelenskyy’s administration until the war reaches an end, framing his dismissal as a consequence of systemic resistance to his recent procurement reforms.

In a statement to the Financial Times, Fedorov argued that his push for transparency and modernization within the Ministry of Defense was the primary catalyst for his ousting, suggesting that entrenched interests within the bureaucracy pushed back against his agenda.

Despite the domestic political upheaval, international observers note that the controversy has not impacted ongoing strategic initiatives. The New York Times reported that key military programs, including the state’s high-tech 'killer robot' development initiatives, remain fully operational and unaffected by the ministerial turnover.
